The HPP nu, ebi what?
Ever wondered what HPP is? Think of HPP as putting your juice inside a submarine. Instead of boiling it on fire, you push it into a strong chamber filled with cold water and squeeze it with pressure so high that bacteria and other bad guys cannot survive.
No heat, no burnt taste, no vitamins cooked away. The juice comes out tasting fresh, like you just pressed it, but now it can sit longer on the shelf. No wahala.
When and where does HPP make sense?
Let’s break it down with real-life scenarios:
-
Cold-pressed premium juice brands: If you want to stand shoulder to shoulder with imported “clean-label” juices in Melcom or Shoprite (Dorime!), HPP will help you keep that fresh taste.
-
Export dreams: Thinking of sending your sobolo or pineapple juice to Europe or the US? They won’t joke with food safety. HPP can help you meet their strict standards.
-
Busy distribution: If your juice has to move from Tema to Kumasi and still sit in a fridge for days before sale, HPP buys you that extra time.
It’s like buying peace of mind that your juice won’t spoil too quickly or embarrass you at the point of sale.
The cash side of HPP

This is where most of us juicepreneurs hold our chins and sigh.
-
Small-scale units start around 50,000 to 100,000 US dollars. That’s not small money.
-
Medium to big systems can easily cross 500,000 dollars, and the biggest ones hit 1 million plus.
-
Add shipping, port duties, and installation, and you’ll feel the weight.
-
Running costs? Stable electricity, water, skilled staff and packaging that can handle the pressure.
So yes, HPP is beautiful, but it is not cheap. It will bleed you dry!
Who sells these machines?
Globally, some big names are leading the HPP game:
-
JBT-Avure in the US.
-
Hiperbaric in Spain.
-
IDUS HPP Systems also from Spain.
-
Quintus Technologies with offices across Europe and America.
Here in Ghana, you may see used or imported HPP units listed by equipment dealers, but there is no widely known local manufacturer yet. If you want one, you’ll likely be importing.
Should you jump on HPP now?
Here’s my honest talk.
-
If you’re just starting out with a few bottles of pineginger, sobolo or pineapple juice for the weekend market, HPP is not for you yet. Your money will finish before you even build your brand.
-
If you already have traction, premium customers, or export buyers lined up, then HPP can be your edge. Your juice will stand out, last longer and meet international standards.
A smart middle road is to look for tolling services. In some countries, small brands rent machine time from bigger factories that already own HPP units. If Ghana develops that system, it will make life easier for juicepreneurs who want the benefits without carrying the full cost.
My take as Juice Hene
HPP is the Bentley of juice processing. Sleek, powerful, and a head-turner. But if you are still at the “trotro” stage of your business journey, don’t rush it. Focus on building a solid brand, loyal customers, and compliance with FDA Ghana. When the time is right, and the business can carry the cost, then HPP will be a sweet investment.
